In an effort to pay homage to some superb Italian design manifested widely through consumer goods, Italian-American designer Gianluca Gimini conceived this series of fictional co-branded sneakers. Looking at Gimini’s body of work, particularly this imaginative series, appropriately titled “Sneakered”, it’s clear that Gimini operates on a creative plane not easily defined. At a time when consumers (very broadly speaking) seem to be steeped in the marketing of nostalgia, Gimini capitalizes on that trend and also taps into a youth culture that holds footwear, specifically sneakers, in high regard. Think of it as an exercise in mashing up historical examples of excellent product design with a vehicle that has global youth appeal (sneakers). Brilliant.

The holiday season really is a time to honor tradition, and that manifests itself in different ways for different people. For us creative folk, it often involves producing some sort of holiday greeting. And for British photographer Peter Thorpe, it also involves his beloved dog Raggle (and a handsome food incentive as payment). For over twenty years, Thorpe has concocted increasingly elaborate holiday photos starring his (very cooperative) pet pooch, who he transforms through the use of good old fashioned costumes and staging (no Photoshop here). Imaginative, fun and inspiring work. Well done!

A quick shoutout to one of out favorite graffiti artists around, ROA. It’s been a while since we posted (here) about this wildly talented Belgian artist. His signature black and white large-scale works featuring animals, often of the scavenger variety, are visually arresting. Some find ROA’s work grotesque, but he cites his fascination with the circle of life, and the beauty in the rhythm of life and death, as his inspiration. We are particularly taken with his imaginative use of space (lenticular rabbit!), and how that advances his art to another level, as exhibited in the particular works below. Be sure to check out the video too. And look out for ROA’s work near you… our Rochester studio has the distinct privilege of being just a mile and a half from one of his murals.

We may have a subconscious fixation with design in Italy… unintentionally our second such post in a row. This time, we look at some imaginative work of Italian art director Matteo Pozzi. Though these are advertisements for the baby product company Cam, they could easily stand on their own as examples of surrealist design. Cam’s mission is, in part, “To look at the world through children’s eyes to understand exactly what they need… only those who know how to look at the world from a child’s point of view can find the solutions to make this world more enjoyable and, above all, safer.” For this campaign, Pozzi and team answer fanciful questions that children ask, employing a surreal visual narrative that is completely engaging. Though these pieces certainly have the potential to be a hodgepodge of gratuitous Photoshop effects, the execution of these concepts in the hands of Pozzi and his team feels organic and looks flawless.

Equador-based artist/illustrator Javier Perez (a.k.a. cintascotch) uses Instagram to disseminate his clever and playful artwork. Perez’s ability to see the world through a very imaginative lens, with almost childlike curiosity, is fantastic. Check Perez’s Instagram account frequently, he adds new artwork (or what he calls “experiments”) often.
