Initially drawn in by typographic papercraft, we quickly realized the portfolio of Lobulo was a treasure trove if dynamic designs. Splitting time between London and Barcelona, Lobulo Design is actually just one man: Javier Rodríguez García. His penchant for working with paper has gained him much respect, and even a viral following online. The well-produced short videos he posts on social media give a nice behind-the-scenes glimpse at Lobule in action, feeding that central hunger for all-access documentation (see some below). The intricacy of Lobulo’s work is striking, and his sense of color and space outstanding. We especially appreciate work that is outside of our comfort zone, and this certainly falls into that category. Just awesome.

There’s an old adage that states “less is more.” And that maxim certainly holds true for this minimalist icon set developed for Schick. There was a notion in the Philippines that Schick was a female brand because of their popular line of lady razors, so the Manila branch of marketing and advertising giant J. Walter Thompson developed this slick set of graphic posters to combat that misperception. These fantastically bold graphics, by the team at JWT Manila, feature recognizable historical and pop culture figures with distinct facial hair (Mr. T from The A-Team, V from V for Vendetta, Salvador Dali, Groucho Marx and Charlie Chaplin) that one can achieve using Schick razors. We love how the product is seamlessly integrated into the designs. There’s certainly market research and number crunching that goes into how and where to market with visuals like these, but we don’t see why a campaign like this wouldn’t be effective here in the US. There seems to be a sort of facial hair renaissance happening right now, and aggressively bold visuals like these would be hard to miss.

With all this fingerprint/Touch ID talk lately, we thought it fitting to take a closer look at some amusing artwork by an Italian artist who goes by the name “Dito Von Tease” (“dito” translates to “finger” in Italian, and is a reference to Dita Von Teese, the famous icon of “burlesque” style and expert in disguises). What started as a simple avatar for his Facebook page has evolved into this amusing and fascinating project that has really caught on (it was featured on the Today Show and there’s even an iPhone app). The philosophy behind the project may seem sort of highbrow, but the whole thing looks like just plain fun. “Dito” explains: “The Ditology-project wants to invite everybody to look beyond the “masks” we use in playing our lives and to go deep to find our unique “fingerprint”. In the “digital age” (digitus is Latin for finger) the finger is the “tool” we use in our touch-screens, mouse pads and keyboard. Thus everybody is “hidden behind his finger” while surfing the internet and especially in social networks.”

Designer/art director Mark Brooks, who splits his time between his native Barcelona and New York City, designed this terrific series of limited edition prints and t-shirts for Barcelona retailer SantaMonica. The bold, sophisticated designs are really something. We especially like the star grid pieces, which are best viewed from a distance.
