Prepare to have your mind blown as we dive into a sea of celebrity mashups. German digital artist and Photoshop whiz simply known as Gesichtermix is a master of photo manipulation. We’re not talking Franken-celebrities here. His careful attention to detail, and keen eye for creating very believable composites of two highly recognizable faces is impressive, to say the least. As a viewer, part of the fun is instantly recognizing one of the celebrities, as the features of the second begin to emerge. We must admit, we could stare at these all day. Try it for yourself… can you guess the pairings? Answers below, but no cheating!

A couple members of the Barbour team had the honor of witnessing a speaking engagement by the incomparable Dana Tanamachi at Create Upstate in Syracuse last week. The event itself was terrific, from the impressive venue (great food, btw), awesome vendors, and stellar lineup of speakers. One highlight was undoubtedly the inspirational work and philosophy of Tanamachi. Honestly, we’re not saying anything new here, just bowing down, as most who are exposed to her transcendent work tend to do. Texas-bred, Brooklyn-based Tanamachi, whose lettering work is quite ubiquitous (you’ve probably seen it, or a rip-off of it, and may not have realized it was hers), seems quite gracious, humble, passionate and sincere when discussing her craft. She’s not some Brooklyn hipster who is too cool for school. Her tremendous talents seemed to have emerged over time, and her rise in the design world happened organically, which we truly admire. Tanamachi is a rock star among our peers, and we are just happy to have spent an engaging hour in her presence. Here’s a small sampling of her formidable body of work… prepare to drool.

The art of quilling, a technique that involves rolling, shaping and gluing strips of paper to form decorative designs, has been around for literally hundreds of years. Russian-born, UK-based designer and artist Yulia Brodskaya has a masterful handle on the time-honored art form, and brings it into the twenty first century through use in advertising, publishing and even CandyCrush-inspired art and animated replicas of her work (seen here and here and here). Her three-dimensional work is vibrant, highly detailed and really thoughtfully crafted. Brodskaya explains her passion for paper in her own words, “Paper always held a special fascination for me. I’ve tried many deferent methods and techniques of working with it, until I found the way that has turned out to be ‘the one’ for me: now I draw with paper instead of on it”. Brodskaya’s reputation is unmatched, with an impressive list of clients to prove it.

North Carolina-based designer/illustrator Matt Stevens has a great eye for branding. His focus and skill with brand identity programs is clear, even in this tongue-in-cheek badge set. We know from experience, successful branding is a tall order, and Stevens captures a quick visual crux of these varying badges beautifully.
