Just when we thought the golden age of music videos has passed and true innovation was practically impossible, enter Los Angeles-based pop/rock band OK Go, who have made a reputation for music video ingenuity again and again. Their latest two videos, “Upside Down & Inside Out” and “The One Moment” (both released within about the past 13 months) continue to push boundaries. The former is a gravity-defying feat via what is referred to as parabolic flight. Without knowing the context, one would think it was an exercise in CGI and green screen trickery. But what makes this gem of a music video so special is the fact that the video was shot in a single, 45 minute take. Then non-micro-gravity portions were simply edited out, for a seamless looking weightless romp to the song’s three-minute length. The latter, “The One Moment”, is touted with the distinct honor of “the shortest amount ever filmed for a music video.” The video uses just 4.2 seconds of footage, stretched out to the song’s full-length by slowing down portions by some 20,000 percent. Sounds pretty straightforward, but rest assured the logistics behind this were meticulously orchestrated by some super creative minds. OK Go is diligent about offering a behind the scenes look at these mini masterpieces, which just bolsters our assertion that some folks simply use more of their creative potential than others. We cannot even begin to wrap our minds around how one would even dream up these concepts, let alone bring them to life. But we’re certainly glad these guys did. In a single word: inspiring. Typography geeks everywhere (including ourselves) are applauding (or should be applauding) Canadian designer/art director Sean Williams for a job well done on his growing series of musical artist portraits made entirely of lyrics and song titles. Many have tried, but we’re not sure any attempts are nearly as successful as these conceptually strong, brilliantly executed pieces. Williams masterfully warps typographic forms to create instantly recognizable faces of some of the biggest players in music today. What an amazing tribute by a super talented designer… hats off to him. Williams has even begun branching out beyond music; the possibilities are endless. Merchandise available here.

London creative agency Tom Hingston Studio was hired to create a campaign the ninth studio album released by British singer-songwriter Robbie Williams, Take The Crown. We wouldn’t normally take notice of random album art, but the work they’ve done is exceptional. THS literally scanned William’s head, then rendered it in a variety of ways. And the results are fantastic. THS explains, “Generating such a wealth of material meant that we could take a much more playful approach to revealing the campaign imagery – allowing the head to appear and behave differently across the various platforms – be it online, print, Augmented Reality, motion billboards or TV.”

What often sets an illustrator apart is style. And skill varies, of course. London-based illustrator/designer Alexis Marcou has the total package, so to speak. The level of detail and realism he achieves is quite remarkable, but his style is also extraordinary. In this self-initiated series spanning more than two years, Marcou captures something really special in four (very different) iconic musical artists. In his own words, “The biggest challenge in technical terms was to preserve the same style throughout even though the four main artists presented here are very different to one another. The whole idea behind this project was to create a style bold enough to fit any music artist without distorting his/her identity.” Seriously enviable work here, folks.
